asl-the-easy-way-book-coverWe want to start this post by telling you that American Sign Language or ASL is technically not a foreign language.  With that in mind, it takes time and effort to learn it and native English speakers can't communicate in ASL. Modern Language Association produces the list of the most studied languages and this time ASL managed to get to the number 4 position. With Spanish being the obvious choice for many, learning ASL can help you to land a job right out of college. Click to see the top 5 list and read more on the subject.

ASL outperformed languages such as Russian, Italian and Arabic. The majority of the students are still choosing Spanish as it is the most widely used non-English language in USA. German held on to the third place only with the help of about 4,500 students who selected it their subject.

Top languages taught in U.S. colleges and universities in 2009

% of students taking a foreign language
• Spanish: 51%
• French: 12%
• German: 5.7%
• American Sign Language: 5.4%
• Italian: 4.8%

Our very own numbers show that ASL is gaining grounds against other foreign languages in services as well.  Once it was introduced as an option to the clients it went up from 0.1% in 2003 to 8.8% in 2010.
