Medical interpreting seminarMedical interpreting seminar by TranslationPerfect.com Interpreter Training Academy is scheduled for September 8, 2006.  This session will be 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Seminar will cover basic aspects of medical interpreting, procedures and policies, situations from the real life with step by step analysis. Guest speakers are Beverley Simpson patient advocate of Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Cecilia Abbey and Karlon R. Cruse Manager  / Interpreter Services of University of Kansas Hospital .  Ms. Simpson, Ms. Abbey and Mr. Cruse are bringing years of experience assuring high quality of healthcare services provided to foreign speaking patients.

Cecilia Abbey

Cecilia was born in Caracas, Venezuela.  She has lived in Bogotá, Colombia, the Canary Islands and Madrid, Spain, and Acapulco, Mexico before arriving in Kansas City, Missouri 23 years ago. In 2001, she earned her Master’s degree in Health Communications at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and shortly thereafter moved to Barcelona, Spain where she earned her TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. Upon her return to the Kansas City area in 2002, Cecilia launched into full-time legal and medical interpreting. She is a State Certified Spanish legal interpreter (Missouri) and a graduate of the “Bridging the Gap,” Cross-Cultural Health Care Program. Since the fall of 2004, Cecilia has worked as Interpreter Coordinator for the Office of Interpreter Services at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In addition to her passion for interpreting, Cecilia enjoys cooking, crossword puzzles, and people watching.


Karlon Cruse

Karlon Cruse is a native of southern New Mexico.  He currently employed as a trilingual interpreter at the University of Kansas Hospital.  Karlon is fluent in English, Spanish, and American Sign-Language (ASL). He is also considered ‘conversational’ in German.  He has served The University of Kansas Hospital since 1996.  Prior to his current employment, he worked more than nine years with the Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing where he served as an interpreter and as an informational resource for deafness and legal compliance issues.  He also served as Coordinator of the Kansas Quality Assurance Screening Test for Sign-Language Interpreters.  He presently holds National Certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID):  IC/TC - CI.  In addition, Karlon has successfully completed the course, “Training for Medical Interpreters / Bridging the Gap” from the “Cross Cultural Health Care Program” (CCHCP) of Seattle, Washington.
